RUSSELL BREAKS OLDBURY RESISTANCE
15 December 2007
Wessex Wanderers 2 v 0 Oldbury Crusaders
Late goals by Gary Russell and Jamie Carnevale sent Wessex Wanderers into the Christmas break on a high with a hard fought win over Oldbury Crusaders on a freezing cold day at the Civil Service Ground.
The first half was a story of missed chances as both sides threatened to open the scoring. Shaun Bartlett’s constant forward runs were causing the away team problems but Oldbury remained stubborn at the back and weathered the storm.
Two superb saves from Carl Bush denied the Crusaders a shock first half lead while the dominant Wanderers also failed to convert a string of chances in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half Oldbury continued to frustrate a desperate Wanderers side by snuffing out attack after attack. With time running out and the away team looking to have snatched a draw against high flying Wessex, winger Gary Russell popped up with his first goal of the season, sending a fine chip over a despairing keeper.
Wessex added a second soon after when a long Simon Mahoney throw was headed onto the far post and was converted by Jamie Carnevale, to wrap up the game and a successful 2007 for the Wanderers.
