WESSEX SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT

24 November 2007

Wessex Wanderers 1 v 5 Lawrence Weston

After 10 consecutive wins, Wessex suffers their first defeat of the season at the hands of Lawrence Weston in the Division 2 top of the table clash. The 1 v 5 score line wasn’t a fair reflection of the match, which Wessex dominated for large periods.

The game started well for the home side as they carved out 2 glorious chances which Carnevale and Perryman failed to convert. Wessex fail behind to a penalty on 20 minutes after substitute Lee Flay was punished for a mistimed tackle in the box.

Wanderers responded well and were back on terms before half time thanks to a Lewis Perryman wonder strike. As the ball bounced out 25 yards from goal there seemed to be little danger for the Weston defence but Perryman had other ideas. The Wessex top scorer unleashed a sweat half volley that thundered into the back of the visitors net.

The turning point of the game happened early in the second half when a Jamie Carnvale goal was incorrectly disallowed for offside. Soon after Lawrence Weston was awarded their second penalty of the game as Russ Francis was harshly penalised for pulling in the box. Stand in keeper Paul Lewis was then beaten from the spot for the second time.

As Wessex pushed forward in search of an equaliser Lawrence Weston hit them on the counter attack. 3 late goals gave the score line a flattering look for the visitors as they move above Wessex to the top of the table.
