GFA GIANT KILLERS

03 November 2007

Wessex Wanderers 2 v 1 Hanham Athletic Reserves

Wessex Wanderers caused a major shock by knocking out Hanham Reserves in the 2nd round of the GFA Cup. Inform Wanderers produced a magnificent performance to eliminate the Bristol & District Senior Division side thanks to goals from Kevin Curtis and Steve Webster.

Hanham came to the Civil Service ground expecting a comfortable victory against the Suburban 2 team but were surprised by the quick tempo with which Wessex started the game.

Wessex dominated the first half, playing clever attacking football which had the visitors on the back foot from the first whistle. The constant pressure paid off in the 34 minute when Steve Webster floated a free-kick into the six yard box and the impressive Kevin Curtis forced the ball home at the back post.

The visitors started the 2nd half brightly, monopolising possession and forcing Wessex to defend deep in their own half. Wessex endured a difficult 10 minute spell but Hanham couldn’t find a way to cut through the Wanderers solid backline. Russ Francis in particular was in inspired form at the back and he helped Wessex regain their composure and once again the black and whites started to build pressure on the opposition.

Wessex we're awarded a penalty in the 72nd minute after a Hanham defender had blocked an out swinging corner with his hand. Steve Webster took responsibility for the spot kick and smashed the ball home to put Wanderers 2 nil up and effectively kill off the game.

Hanham did manage a late goal to set up a tense final 5 minutes but Wessex effectively ran the clock down to seal a memorable cup giant killing. Wanderers will have to produce a similar feat in round 3 after being drawn away to AXA Reserves.
