WESSEX CUP FINAL SQUAD NAMED

Wanderers 1st team manager Shaun Hawkings today named a 16 man squad to represent Wessex in the clubs two upcoming cup final appearances.

Wessex face Imperial Saints on Thursday 17th of April in the Norman Goulding Cup at Yate Town's Ground (Kick-off 7.30pm).

Then on Tuesday the 22nd of April Wessex battle with Longwell Green Sports in the GFA Cup in Almondsbury (Kick-off 7.30pm).

The Wessex Cup Final Squad:

Carl Bush

Carl signed for Wessex towards the end of the 2004/05 campaign and made an immediate impression with a string of commanding performances and wonderful saves. Carl quickly established himself as the clubs No. 1 and is recognised as one of the best keepers in the Bristol & Suburban League. Not only does he consistently produce match winning performances but he also has an outstandinging record of saving penalties.

Steve Pocock

Steff is a young player with tremendous ability who can play at either centre back or on the left side of defence or midfield. Pocock signed for the club at the beginning of the 2003/04 campaign and won the reserve team Managers’ Player award that year. Steff's quality passing and powerful left foot also earned him a call up to the 1st team at the end of that season where he has been a fixture in the team ever since.

Lee Flay

Flay signed for Wessex at the start of the 2001/02 season as a right winger and won the Players Player award in his first year. A natural athlete who is blessed with blistering pace and mental strength, Flay was converted to centre back for the 2005/06 season. Acting as the team’s sweeper, his pace and competitive attitude made him an instant success in that position and he was rewarded with the Managers’ Player award.

Russell Francis

Signed at the beginning of the season Russ as quickly settled into life at Wessex. A strong centre back who also as the ability to get the ball down and get the team passing the ball around at the back.

Lee Dorgan

A former egg-chaser, Dorgan signed for the club during the 1999/00 campaign and made the transition from rugby to football look easy. He is an honest and hard working player who gives everything during the game. A natural defender with good leadership ability Dorgs has been a regular in the Wanderers back line. Lee has won the Players Player trophy twice, in 2000/01 and 2004/05.

Simon Mahoney

Signed at the beginning of the season, Mo confidence on the ball and knowledge of the game makes him a valuable addition to the squad. His versatility means he has operated in a number of positions across the pitch during this campaign.

Stuart Smart

Stuart is the Wessex captain and is a very good leader of the team as well as being an invaluable player. A central midfielder with a great engine, Stu as the ability to work box to box and get the team passing through the middle of the park. His consistent form has been rewarded with the Players Player award in the 2002/03 season and the Managers’ Player in 2004/05.

Steve Webster

Once described as "the beating heart of Wessex" Steve has been one of the clubs most influential players since joining the team in 1997. Webbo is well known for his crunching tackles and up and at um attitude, he is also a good reader of the game and deadly from the penalty spot. His work rate in the centre of midfield as provided a solid base for the team for many years and Webster's efforts have been rewarded by winning the Managers’ Player trophy in 1998/99, 2001/02 & 2006/07.

Kevin Curtis

Kevin ‘Bear’ Curtis is currently in his second spell with the Wanderers after signing for the club at the beginning of the 2007/08 campaign. The former Clutten man has now established himself at the heart of the Wessex midfield where his passing skills and ability to link defence and attack have made him a major asset for the team. Kevin also as a keen eye for goal and his heading ability makes him a real threat from set pieces.

Gary Russell

Baz signed for Wessex towards the end of the 1997/98 season and as been a permanent fixture on the left side of midfield ever since. He has the ability to get past defenders and create scoring chances for himself and team mates. Scoring is a big part of Gary’s game, having won the golden boot in 2000/01 & 2002/03 season, which is a great achievement for a wide midfielder. As one of the teams dead ball specialist Gary can score not only from free kicks but corners too.

Aaron Pullin

Aaron is a midfielder with good attacking instincts, always looking to get forward to create chances for himself and teammates. Pullin’s work rate and ability on the ball means he is often used as a wide midfielder where he can get more freedom to penetrate the opposition.

Lewis Perryman

Lewis signed for the club towards the end of the 2006/07 season and quickly established himself as free scoring striker for the Wessex ‘A’ Team. He started this campaign with the 1st team and scored on his debut and as continued to bang the goals in all season. Perryman’s electrifying pace when running with the ball and his ability to score from anywhere around the box makes him a defenders worst nightmare.

Jamie Carnevale

Carney is an old fashioned centre forward who is used as the team target man due to his good heading ability and willingness to battle for the cause. Having signed for the club in 2001 Jamie has finished as the clubs golden boot winner on 4 occasions. Unfortunately Carney missed most of the 2002/03 season after breaking his leg but came back strong the following year to win both the Players Player and Managers’ Player awards.

Shaun Bartlett

Shaun was signed at the start of the 2005/06 campaign to help bolster the Wanderers defensive options. The youngsters made an immediate impression with his strength and defensive qualities seeming well ahead of his tender years. Now often employed as a wide midfielder Shaun’s powerful runs down the flank can cause the opposition real problems.

Jon Flynn

Jon is a player with good pace and a lot of energy who will never stop running and hassling the opposition. Naturally a striker, Jon as often played as a wide midfielder for the 1st team, working hard defensively as well as attacking down the flanks.

Luke Webster

Luke’s impressive scoring record for the ‘A’ team was rewarded with a call up to the 1st team squad. The youngster as pace and a lot of ability and having scored on his 1st team debut looks set to have a bright future ahead of him.
